In Varaignes

Varaignes is at the crossroads of three departments. This town in the north of Périgord Vert, touches the Charente to the west and to the north, Haute-Vienne.

There are many memories of the Middle Ages in Varaignes. The castle (14th at the beginning of the 17th century) and the church were once joined by an underground passage.

Les Recettes was the place where the inhabitants brought the tax in kind they owed to the lord.

The 'four banal' mill and the 'banal' oven (not open to visitors) as well as the Saint-Jean fountain, a former devotional fountain are still standing today.

The old houses huddled together in narrow streets that climb the slope leading from the stream to the top of the plateau.
